Hill 582 - Part 3

Hill 582 is the "paradise" for the railfans. It is located between BNSF MT-3 (South Track) and BNSF MT-2 and MT-1 (North Tracks). In addition the UPT is just above the BNSF Main 1 & 2. In other words, we have 4 tracks for almost unlimited activities.
A big thank you goes to Don E. Toles and his friends for taking care of this "one of a kind oasis" in the middle of Cajon Pass.
For more in deep information of Hill 582, we have 3 pages incl. the History of Hill 582 "The Early Years" and "The Late Years" written by Don E. Toles. Even a description w/photos "How to Acces Hill 582" can be found on the Hill 582 Main Page.
Take a look - you will be impressed - click here

Wednesday, June 2, 2010 was a spectacular day because Werner & Stefan flew over Cajon Pass with a Cessna 172 for taking movies and photos. Gary took the photos of our Cessna while flying over Hill 582. The result can be seen on the 3 photos below. For more aerial photos - click here

While the 2 Swiss boys were flying back to the Apple Valley Airport and driving by car back to Hill 582, our friends finally got some trains passing Hill 582. During the flight over the Pass between 08.15 and 09.20 h from Hesperia to Blue Cut and back we did not have a single train. If we would have been later there would be more traffic. Anyway, Gary and Keith were able to catch the delayed WB Amtrak South West Chief and a BNSF EB Double Stack Train.

Our 5th train of the day is our last one as we will soon go for lunch. To be honest, as a UP fan, I am happy to see another UP train, today. As usual, most cars are full of graffiti and I just have to take pictures. You never know if one or the other car will be used as an example for the model layout.

These are the last pictures of Hill 582 for Wednesday, June 2, 2010. Afterwards we went to Hesperia for lunch at Molly Brown's Restaurant (Da Dump) with Don and Gary. In the afternoon we went to other locations in Cajon Pass. In the meantime, most photos of the other locations are online.

Below are my photos of June 4, 2010 - last day on Hill 582 for this trip.

Friday, June 4, 2010 was our last day on Hill 582. We met our special friends Don Toles (Hilltender), Jerry Shinar (West Summit Island) and big surprise, (see photos 3520 and 3542) David Miller (BNSF Manager-Engineering) who was leading the 3rd Main Track Construction over Cajon Pass. He is currently taking care of the BNSF double track project in Abo Canyon, NM. It should be finished in middle of 2011.
I met Mr. Miller 2 years ago during the 3MT construction and he told me, that many of the construction people enjoyed seeing their work on my 3MT Cajon website.
BTW: If you look close to the official BNSF calendar, you may even see at least one photo taken by David Miller. So, in other words, he is also a railfan.

Why are some photos taken from the Hill sometimes against the light? The Hill is between BNSF Main 1/2 and Main 3. So, in the morning we have good light for MT-1 and MT-2 but for MT-3 we are actually on the wrong side. In addition, just before the Hill MT-3 makes a left turn (seen westbound). The result can be seen on these photos below. Usually, there is not enough time to run to the South end of the Hill, go down to MT-3 track level, cross the tracks and walk up. Nevertheless, for me it was an "important" TOFC train because there are several Werner Enterprises trailers. Want to see more? - click here

This UP WB train is having an interesting mix of Double Stack Cars and Trailer Flat Cars. First part is DBS, second is TOFC, third is DBS, fourth is TOFC and last part is again DBS. Therefore, we can do the same on a model layout to reflect such a combination.
